About
As an academic surgeon, Professor Mintz's clinical, teaching and research activities are focused on using innovative surgical technology for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). MIS has been the center of his clinical and research activities for the past 20 years, and through his work at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, he managed to enhance and promote MIS, both in Israel and internationally.
Clinical Activity
In his clinic activities, Professor Mintz built the Foregut Surgery Unit and completely transformed upper GI surgery in Hadassah from mostly open surgery to almost exclusively Minimally Invasive Surgery, including difficult operations such as total esophagectomy. For more than a decade, Professor Mintz was the only surgeon in Israel who performed flexible endoscopy as part of MIS and recently, due to advocating for this capability in Israel more surgeons were trained and are performing gastroscopies during their operations. These two major changes resulted in significant reduction in surgical morbidity and mortality and
improved patients’ outcome.
Research and Development (R&D)
His research activities have been and still are aimed towards enhancing MIS capabilities, reducing the complexity of surgery and lowering the surgical risks involved in MIS. To this end, he constructed a dedicated laboratory
for MIS research and device development, equipped with state-of-the-art laparoscopic and endoscopic towers as well as intraoperative imaging capabilities.
Under Professor Mintz's guidance, the labs infrastructure is used as a hub for start-up companies as well for established corporates for their R&D. Either as a consultant, advisory board member or as a founder, he assists in the concept creation of novel medical devices, continuing to the design, performing animal studies, and after the necessary approvals performing the first-in-man studies, either in Hadassah or outside Israel.
Teaching
Prof. Mintz dedicates significant time to train the next generation of MIS surgeons. He constructed the Center for MIS training in Hadassah, which allowed him to train multiple medical students, surgical residents and senior surgeons each for their appropriate level of expertise, from basic training, to Hands-On laparoscopic training on live animals. He has developed a unique format for training entire surgical wards in Israel, where most surgical residents and some attending surgeons are hosted for a two-day MIS course. The first day is dedicated to lectures on the topic they desire, and the following day Hands-On laparoscopic training while their own attending surgeons train their residents, with our guidance and assistance. This format was well accepted and applied even for non-General Surgery departments. Advanced training is available for specific operations including Hands-on live animal training followed by live transmission from the OR with live discussions.
Teaching Innovation- Until recently, Professor Mintz served as the Clinical Director for the BioDesign Israel Masters course in the Hebrew University for five years. In this course, each academic year, we constructed 4 groups composed of physicians, engineers and law students from the Hebrew University, teaching them how to innovate and creating 1- 2 start-up companies each year as a result of proctoring them on relevant projects.
